A delay isn't a win. Here's how to help make it permanent.

Show up when it counts — Full Council, 15 September

This is the top priority right now. On 3 September, the LEHR Committee recommended retaining a permanent, staffed library at Burleigh Heads — a huge step, but a committee recommendation is not a final decision. It still needs to be adopted by:

You don't need to speak or know anything about how council meetings work — just be there. Bring your kids, your parents, a friend. Save the date, show up, and fill that public gallery — council needs to physically see the community behind the petition, submissions and letters of support, not just read about it on paper.

What we're asking Full Council to protect on 15 September — a genuine library, not a token one:

• Same ground-floor location
• Full hours and services
• Adequate space
• Proper City funding

Ask your state MP to confirm the land use conditions

The Burleigh Heads Library site — 14 Ocean St (Lot 8 on B16753, Reserve 907) — is recorded as State land, held in reserve for local government, with Primary Land Use recorded as "55 — Library." Questions have been raised about whether the proposed change of use is consistent with the conditions governing that reserve. This is a state government matter, not a council one — which is why it needs your state MP.

A resident has already lodged a Right to Information application with council for the underlying documents — the original resolution, gazettal/reserve documents, the instrument appointing council as trustee, and the conditions governing council's use of the reserve. Council accepted the narrowed request on 26 August, but it isn't due back until 30 September — after the 15 September vote. The same resident formally asked Cr Josh Martin and Hermann Vorster MP for clarification on 6 August and hasn't had an answer.

If you're in the Burleigh state electorate, write to Hermann Vorster MP, who has already backed the campaign, and ask him to use his position to obtain and confirm, on the public record, before the vote:

• The exact conditions governing this reserve, and whether they've ever changed
• Whether council's proposed changes comply with those conditions
• Whether council has obtained appropriate legal advice on this point

If you're elsewhere on the Gold Coast, write to your own state MP with the same ask — state-level pressure from across the city adds weight Hermann's advocacy alone can't. We're not claiming these records prove council can't make the change — we simply don't know yet, and that's exactly why the answer needs to come before the vote, not after.

Visit the library and borrow books

The simplest, most direct thing you can do. Go in, borrow something, take a friend. If you stop at a local shop or café before or after, mention you're on the way to (or just been to) the library — it helps make the economic case for keeping it open, not just the emotional one.

Email your councillor

The LEHR Committee's recommendation is good news, but it's not adopted yet. Full Council votes on 15 September, and councillors need to hear, directly and clearly, that their constituents want the library kept open — so they vote accordingly.

Thank them for the committee's recommendation, and ask them to vote to adopt it in full on 15 September — a genuine library, in its current location, with full hours and services. Share a personal reason the library matters to you or your family — it carries more weight than a form message.

Ask your councillor directly: if this is State land with LIBRARY recorded as its land use, what conditions govern that reserve, has that ever changed, and is the proposed permanent change of use consistent with it? If council has already obtained legal advice confirming it complies, say so — if not, that's a question to answer before voting, not after.

Keep talking to people

Not everyone who uses the library follows council decisions closely. Tell neighbours, mention it at school pickup, put a flyer up at your workplace or club — awareness is what got 3,000 signatures in ten days the first time, and what will keep councillors hearing about this.
